High Chrome Steel Grinding Media Balls

High Chrome Steel Grinding Media Balls

Chromium content: 10–26%. Surface hardness: 58–64 HRC. Breakage rate: <0.5%.
Suitable for dry grinding in cement production, coal milling, and processing of corrosive mineral slurries.

Product Introduction

High chrome steel grinding media balls are cast grinding media typically containing 10%–26% chromium. The formation of M7C3-type carbides within the matrix imparts excellent wear and corrosion resistance to the steel balls. Manufactured using electric furnace melting, automated casting, and controlled heat treatment processes, our products are designed for demanding operating conditions-such as dry grinding circuits, cement mills, coal pulverization systems, and environments involving acidic or high-chloride-ion mineral slurries-where both wear and corrosion are significant concerns.

Chromium grade options

Low-chrome (10–12% Cr) – Cost-effective wear resistance for moderate abrasion conditions, suitable for cement raw meal and coal grinding.

Medium-chrome (14–18% Cr) – Balanced wear and toughness, commonly used in cement clinker and dry grinding circuits.

High-chrome (20–26% Cr) – Maximum wear and corrosion resistance for aggressive slurry, acidic conditions, and fine grinding applications.

Key Features

Excellent Wear and Corrosion Resistance

High-chromium alloys form high-hardness carbides internally, providing wear resistance that far surpasses that of conventional low-alloy forged grinding balls-whether in dry grinding operations or in corrosive slurries containing acids or high levels of chlorides. When used in equipment such as cement or coal mills, these balls significantly extend the interval between replenishment cycles and reduce steel ball consumption per ton of material processed.

01

Low Breakage Rate (<0.5%) for Continuous Production

Through precise control of the casting and heat-treatment processes, the breakage rate of the steel balls is strictly kept below 0.5%. This effectively minimizes downtime caused by broken balls clogging discharge screen plates and ensures a stable grinding media load within the ball mill.

02

Uniform Hardness from Surface to Core

Each batch undergoes rigorous inspection for surface and core hardness, as well as carbide distribution. Consistent hardness from the outer layer to the core prevents the material from becoming "softer" as it wears down or experiencing abnormal spalling, ensuring a predictable service life.

03

Resistant to High Temperatures (up to 120°C)

These balls are highly resistant to annealing (loss of hardness) in high-temperature, dry-grinding environments. They are particularly well-suited for cement tube mills and vertical or ball-type coal mills, where shell temperatures can reach as high as 120°C.

Steel drum, 900–1,000 kg net - stacks four high, travels better in humid conditions

Jumbo bag with discharge spout, 1,000 kg net - discharges by crane, less packaging waste at site

Each unit marked with grade, diameter, heat number and net mass; loading photographed before the vessel sails

Quality documentation

Mill test certificate with chemical composition and hardness; EN 10204 3.1 available on request.

Heat numbers matched to the packing list for traceability, including for issues reported long after delivery.

Third-party inspection by SGS, BV or Intertek available at additional cost.

ISO 9001:2015 certified, with production also managed under ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.

FAQ

Q: High chrome or forged?

A: High chrome steel grinding media balls resists abrasive wear and corrosion; forged is tougher under impact but wears faster in abrasive ore. High chrome wins on cost per tonne milled in fine and abrasive duty, forged wins in SAG and heavy-impact duty.

Q: Do High chrome steel grinding media balls break in the mill?

A: Breakage depends on impact energy and ball size more than chromium content. That is why we do not recommend high chrome for SAG duty.

Q: Can you match our current grade?

A: Yes. Send the mill test certificate or the chemistry you are running and we quote to that specification.

Q: What sizes and packing?

A: 20–110 mm, to a specified distribution; steel drum or jumbo bag. Shenyang Muren Machinery Co., Ltd. - manufacturers of steel ball rolling rolls, guide plates, couplings and wear parts since 2016. 11,000 m² base, 6,000 m² machine shop, ISO 9001 certified.
