Steel Grinding Media

Steel Grinding Media

Multiple Media Types: Forged, rolled and high chrome cast balls, plus cylpebs.
Custom Specifications: Various ball sizes, steel grades and chromium contents.
In-House Tooling: Rolls and guide plates manufactured in-house.

Product Introduction

Steel grinding media are used in ball mills to grind ore, cement raw materials and other materials. The choice of forged, rolled or cast media affects wear rates, mill operation and grinding costs. We supply forged and rolled carbon and low-alloy steel balls in sizes from 20 mm to 125 mm, high chrome cast balls with 11%–26% chromium, and cylpebs in sizes specified for each order. Our production also includes the rolls and guide plates used to manufacture rolled balls, allowing us to produce both Steel grinding media and the tooling used in the rolling process.

Materials

Medium

Process

Material

Where It Earns Its Place

Carbon steel ball

Forged or rolled

C 0.60–1.10%, Mn 0.60–1.20%

General milling where first cost dominates and breakage is not the limiting factor

Low-alloy steel ball

Forged or rolled

C 0.60–1.10% with Cr 0.5–2.0%

Better hardenability, harder matrix, longer life in abrasive ore at moderate cost

High chrome ball

Cast

High chromium white cast iron, 11–26% Cr

Abrasive ore, corrosive pulp, dry cement and coal grinding

Cylpeb

Cast

High chrome or low-alloy, 35 × 45 mm and 45 × 55 mm

Fine and regrind duty where surface area per tonne matters more than impact

Product Advantages

Longer wear life

Chromium carbides in a hardened martensitic matrix resist gouging abrasion; the ball wears by attrition instead of spalling, so the charge holds its size distribution longer.

01

Low breakage

Controlled casting and rolling, a recorded quench-and-temper cycle, and drop testing on production samples.

02

Uniform hardness

Surface and core hardness tested per batch, so the ball wears evenly from skin to centre.

03

Consistent size distribution

We machine the rolls and make the balls in the same plant, so the distribution we quote is the one our own tooling produces.

04

Full traceability

Every shipment carries a heat number linking chemistry, hardness and packing list.

Media We Recommend

What Decides It

Gold and copper ore, primary milling

Overflow ball mill

Rolled 60–100 mm, or high chrome 15% Cr and above

Abrasiveness, ball breakage rate, pulp pH

Iron ore, hard siliceous feed

Grate discharge ball mill

High chrome 15–17% Cr

Wear rate against cost per tonne milled

Cement raw and finish milling

Two or four chamber tube mill

High chrome 12% Cr, 17–60 mm

Dry grinding, outlet temperature, chamber profile

Coal pulverising

Tube or ball mill

High chrome 12–20% Cr

Corrosive dry condition, fineness target

Regrind and fine grinding

Regrind or tower mill

High chrome 20% Cr and above, 20–40 mm

Surface area per tonne, low pH pulp

FAQ

Q: Which Steel grinding media should I use in my mill?

A: Send the mill dimensions, ore type, current consumption in kg per tonne milled and target P80. Abrasive ore with corrosive pulp points to cast high chrome; impact-dominated duty with coarse feed points to a rolled ball.

Q: What is the difference between forged and cast media?

A: Forged and rolled balls are through-hardened steel, tough under impact. Cast high chrome balls carry chromium carbides and resist abrasion and corrosion better, but are more brittle. Neither is universally better; the duty decides.

Q: Can you match the grade we already run?

A: Yes. Send the current mill test certificate or the chemistry, and we quote to it.

Q: Do you supply samples?

A: Yes, sample drums can be sent for trial charging; the quantity and freight terms are agreed per case.
