Visual characteristics of a steel ball
Perfect Geometric Shape
The most striking feature of a steel ball is its perfect roundness, like an ideal sphere drawn with a compass in three-dimensional space. This strictly symmetrical shape causes it to produce a uniform reflection of sunlight and maintain a perfect trajectory when rolling. The roundness error of industrial-grade steel balls is typically less than 0.01 mm, equivalent to one-seventh the diameter of a human hair.
Metallic Surface
Depending on the manufacturing process, steel balls exhibit two typical surface finishes:
Mirror Polished: Commonly used in precision bearings, it clearly reflects fingerprints.
Frosted Finish: Primarily used in abrasive media, it has a uniform matte, grainy texture.
It's worth noting that brand-new steel balls have a distinctive metallic sheen on the edges, while steel balls that have been used for a long time develop unique wear patterns.
Size Variety
From miniature watch parts to giant crushing devices, the diameter range of steel balls is astonishing:
Miniature: 1 mm (About the size of a pencil tip).
Standard: 5-50 mm (Marble to tennis ball size range).
Industrial Grade: Over 200 mm (Approaching the size of a basketball).
