Flexible Grid Coupling

The flexible grid coupling uses a serpentine spring steel grid that snaps into slots machined into two hubs. It is a common choice for conveyor drives, pumps, and compressors because it handles shock loads more effectively than many other coupling types.

Product Introduction

The Flexible Grid Coupling into the hub slots, and a steel cover holds it in place while also keeping grease inside the coupling. When a torque spike occurs, the grid twists slightly, absorbing the shock instead of transmitting it through to the connected equipment. Compared to rubber element couplings, the grid coupling delivers higher torque capacity in a smaller package and can operate at higher temperatures. For example, we have supplied these for mining conveyors and steel mill roller tables where shock loads are a daily occurrence.

 

Product Parameters

 

The torque range runs from 150 Nm up to 100,000 Nm, depending on the model. Bore sizes are available from 12 mm to 300 mm. The maximum speed is 6000 rpm, although this varies with the coupling size. Angular misalignment capacity is up to 0.5 degrees, and parallel misalignment is up to 0.4 mm. With standard grease, the operating temperature range is from minus 30 degrees Celsius to plus 120 degrees Celsius.

 

Advantages

 

One useful feature is that the grid acts as a mechanical fuse. If the system is severely overloaded, the grid will deform rather than allowing the shaft to shear or other components to break. The coupling also dampens torsional vibration, which helps extend the service life of gearboxes and bearings under normal operating conditions. Lubrication is required, but the sealed cover keeps grease in and contaminants out, so maintenance intervals are typically every 6 to 12 months. When the grid eventually wears out, replacing it takes about one hour, and you do not need to move the hubs from their shafts.

We machine the hubs from 45# steel and apply an anti-rust oil coating before packing. The Flexible Grid Coupling is stamped from spring steel, and the covers are made from cast iron or aluminum depending on the torque rating. For non-standard bore sizes, the lead time is 20 to 35 working days. Common sizes are kept in stock, and we can arrange either sea or air freight according to your delivery requirements.

Q: How often do I need to add grease to this coupling?

A: Under normal operating conditions, every 6 to 12 months. If the coupling runs in a dusty or high-temperature environment, we recommend shortening the interval to 3 months.

Q: What happens if the grid breaks?

A: You will hear a rattling noise coming from the coupling. We recommend replacing the grid quickly to avoid damaging the hub slots. The coupling will still transmit some torque, but continued operation will cause wear on the hubs.

Q: Can I reuse the cover after replacing the grid?

A: Yes, the cover is reusable. Simply clean out the old grease, install the new grid, pack fresh grease, and reinstall the cover.
