Brief description of coupling

A coupling, also known as a shaft coupling, is a mechanical component used to securely connect the driving and driven shafts in different mechanisms, enabling them to rotate together and transmit motion and torque. It is sometimes also used to connect shafts to other parts (such as gears and pulleys).

It is usually composed of two halves, connected separately by keys or tight fits, fastened to the two shaft ends, and then joined together in some way. Couplings can compensate for misalignment (including axial, radial, angular, or combined misalignment) between two shafts caused by manufacturing or installation inaccuracies, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion; and also mitigate shocks and absorb vibrations.

Most commonly used couplings are standardized or pre-defined. Generally, it is only necessary to correctly select the type, model, and dimensions of the coupling. If necessary, load capacity calculations can be performed on its vulnerable points; at high speeds, the centrifugal force on its outer edge and the deformation of the elastic element should also be checked, and balance verification should be performed.
